Line Stopping

Safely isolate only what you’re working on—no full shutdowns—so maintenance, repairs, and upgrades happen faster with minimal tenant impact.

WellFab provides safe, engineered isolation of live piping so you can complete repairs, tie-ins, or replacements without a full system shutdown. Using a hot tap and a temporary plugging head, we create a controlled, verifiable isolation—and, when needed, a bypass—to keep flow, pressure, and temperature within spec. Ideal for heating/chilled water, district energy, domestic water, fire protection, and industrial/process lines. All work is planned, executed, and documented to rigorous Quality Assurance and Quality Control standards.

Why Line Stopping

Line stopping lets us temporarily block flow in a live pipe so we can isolate part of the system without shutting everything down. By installing a line stop fitting and deploying an internal plugging head, we can take one section offline, drain it, and work on it — while the rest of the network keeps running.

This is critical for systems that can’t go down (heating/chilled water loops, district energy, domestic water, fire mains, process lines, etc.). You still get the isolation you need, but the building or plant stays in service.

Line Stop Solutions

  • Install or swap full-bore valves on launcher/receiver stations or large mains while the system remains in service.
    Capabilities

    • Single/dual line stops to create a dead, depressurized work zone

    • Valve fit-up (welded/flanged/grooved), torque/actuation checks, and leak testing

    • Controlled recommissioning with documentation and as-builts

  • Isolate a segment to fix defects, replace aging sections, or permanently abandon lines—without impacting the rest of the network.
    Capabilities

    • Upstream/downstream stopples, cut-and-replace spools, or end caps/blinds

    • Safe drain, purge/inert (e.g., nitrogen), hydro/pressure tests

    • Final isolation verification and handover records

  • Create a new alignment and tie it in under pressure, keeping flow available during the changeover.
    Capabilities

    • Temporary bypass design to maintain service during cutover

    • Sequenced isolations and staged tie-ins to the new route

    • Survey, fit-up, and post-work verification

  • Provide a safe window to install repair clamps/sleeves or remove and replace a damaged mid-span section.
    Capabilities

    • Dual line stops straddling the defect with monitored isolation

    • ASME-compliant sleeves/clamps or cut-out and new spool install

    • Certified welding, NDT, and pressure/leak testing

  • Positively isolate vessels/nozzles and injection lines for internal inspection, valve/nozzle change-outs, or maintenance.
    Capabilities

    • Hot tap + line stop at the nozzle or upstream tie-in point

    • Blind/spade installation, controlled depressurization, gas testing

    • Confined-space coordination and safe recommissioning

  • Isolate headers, end manifolds, and terminal connections to enable repair, upgrades, metering changes, or new tie-ins.
    Capabilities

    • Header-by-header isolations with optional bypass to keep operations running

    • Metering/filter/valve replacements and terminal tie-ins under isolation

    • Hydrotest/proving support and full documentation

  • Create a positive isolation at pipeline ends, headers, and terminal stations to enable component swaps and upgrades while the rest of the network stays in service.
    Capabilities

    • Single/dual line stops with optional bypass to maintain flow during work

    • Valve, meter, filter/coalescer, or control upgrades; terminal tie-ins and spool replacements

    • Hydro/pressure testing, documentation, and stepwise return to operation

Single Stop

  • One plugging point isolates the section

  •  The isolated area is drained and secured

  •  Ideal for localized repairs or alterations

  • The plug functions as a temporary shut-off valve

Double Stop with Bypass

  • Two plugging points isolate a full section of the line

  • The section between the plugs is drained and made safe

  • A temporary bypass maintains flow to the rest of the system

  • Ideal for larger cut-outs, valve replacements, reroutes, and tie-ins without shutdown
